Partial response
A partial response is a form someone started filling in but never submitted. It is saved as they go, so the respondent can come back — and you can see how far they got.
For the respondent it is insurance. On a longer form people need to look something up, close a window or move to a computer. If part-filled answers are not saved they start over — and usually they do not start a second time.
For you it is diagnostics. When partial responses pile up at the same step, that is not chance: something in that step stops people. Usually it is either something they do not know off the top of their head, or something they will not disclose without an explanation.
Partial responses are kept apart from submitted ones so they do not distort your statistics or exports. They are not valid responses — they are unfinished attempts.
