Completion rate
Completion rate is the share of people who submitted a form out of those who opened it. It is the most practical form metric — more than traffic, it tells you whether the form is usable.
A low completion rate usually has mundane causes: the form is too long, it asks for things the respondent does not have at hand, or it looks untrustworthy.
The fastest improvement is shortening. Every field deserves the question “do we really need this right now?”. Anything that can be collected later does not belong here.
The second step is conditional logic — instead of deleting questions, show them only to the people they apply to. The form stays complete but feels short to everyone.
In practice
- Cut the form down to the fields you truly need.
- Split a long form into steps with a progress bar.
- Use conditional logic so each person sees only their questions.
- Explain why you ask for more sensitive details.
- Watch in-progress responses to learn where people drop off.
FAQ
How do I find where people drop off?
In-progress responses show which step people stopped at.
One long step or several short ones?
For longer forms, usually several steps — respondents see progress and are less likely to quit.
Does making fields required help?
Usually the opposite. The more required fields, the more pressure; keep required only what the response cannot exist without.
